Oh Hilary, such a young little overachiever. While the rest of us are still figuring out what we want to be when we grow up, she's out there singing, acting and raising money for charity. And now she can add "perfumer" to that résumé. This September you'll start seeing her fragrance, With Love...Hilary Duff, $55, all over department stores. Here she tells us why it's worth taking a sniff. -Courtney D.
Courtney: This is a pretty sophisticated fragrance for such a youngster. What's the deal?
Hilary: I grew up always wanting to be like my older sister, so I felt drawn to more sophisticated things. I wanted this scent to be different but still appeal to a lot of people. Moms and daughters can both wear it.
Courtney: How did you go about getting exactly what you wanted?
Hilary: I made sure I was involved in the entire process. The head perfumers gave me a lot of freedom to take risks with the notes. Like cocobolo wood and mangosteen fruit--those are very unusual ingredients.
Courtney: They sure are. It sounds like you had a lot of fun.
Hilary: I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the process. It was fun, but not easy. We went through 115 changes to get to the final fragrance. It's a layered fragrance and it develops on your skin.
Courtney: It smells warm and milky. It that what you originally intended?
Hilary: My first inspiration was this wonderful candle I have at home. We figured out that the amber note in the candle is what I liked so much, so we started there. And I thought I liked grapefruit until I actually put it in there and it smelled bad.
Courtney: Did you help design the bottle, too?
Hilary: Yes, I wanted it to be antiquey. It was inspired by one of my favorite vintage rings. The outer carton is light blue with gold scroll, so it looks like a beautiful present waiting to be opened. Do you like it?
